TMJ pain occurs when the chewing muscles and the jaw joint work incorrectly. This is often because your teeth don't come together properly when you bite or chew, and the whole balance of your jaw is thrown off. You might feel your jaw popping or locking. Called "malocclusion," this imbalance causes the muscles to cramp or go into spasms. This results in a cycle of damage, pain and tenderness.
There are many causes of TMJ, including injuries to the jaw, neck or head, or even genetic patterns. The complicated nature of TMJ and its causes make diagnosis and treatment by a TMJ expert is vital.
