About Dr. Mitakides

TMJ Treatment: Careful, conservative and according to the condition of the patient

With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Mitakides and the trained staff of the TMJ Treatment Center are ready to help you with TMJ, headache and jaw pain.  Because the causes and symptoms of TMJ vary, so do treatments.  No treatment can be recommened until the patient is carefully examined and evaluated.  A few of the possible treatments include:

1.  Eliminating muscle spasms and pain, often utilizing heat packs, muscle massage and switching to a soft diet.  Among the specific neuromuscular dentistry treatments Dr. Mitakides uses are specialized lasers, ultrasound, and for advanced cases, trigger point injection.  Sometimes, mild muscle relaxants or pain medication is prescribed.

2.  If you do have a bite that doesn't fit together properly, it must be corrected.  Sometimes, this is simply a matter of smoothing down "high" points on the teeth.  A corrective bite plane or splint is also sometimes used.  If necessary, Dr. Mitakides will refer to an orthodontist with expertise in the necessary appliances to correct the bite.

3.  Because stress and teeth-grinding is often part of TMJ, relaxation therapy can help with TMJ syndrome, helping to "unknot" the muscles.

4.  In very rare, severe cases, surgery can be considered.  It may be required when the joint is chronically out of position, due to conditions like injury or arthritis.

ALWAYS:  Successful treatment begins by talking with a TMJ expert and getting an accurate diagnosis.  Contact us for your free copy of our informative brochure,  "A Quick Look at TMJ."
